U.S. National Debt: Visualizing $18 Trillion

For most of us, it’s hard to conceptualize the U.S. national debt of $18 trillion in debt  (and an additional $80+ trillion for unfunded liabilities such as Social Security, Medicare).

We hear economists and politicians throwing these numbers around with such ease that we become lulled into complacency about the magnitude of that number.  It seems like just another number with a lot of zeros (in fact 12 zeros).

For starters, one trillion = 1,000,000 millions  OR  1000 billions.

Here are some $1 trillion and $18 trillion illustrations:

  • If you spent a dollar per second of every day, it would take you 32,000 years to make it to $1 trillion. For $18 trillion, it would take 576,000 years.

Let’s visualize $1 trillion a bit more:

Although economists do not agree on the solution to the U.S. national debt crisis nor the global economic crisis, they do agree we are swimming in uncharted waters.

This is not a consequence-free environment. And while you and I can’t fix the debt problem, we can certainly reduce our own exposure to what happens in our future.

The best investment we can make is in our financial education.

Many financial advisors encourage clients to have a small portion of their portfolio in precious metals such as gold as a wealth protection “insurance”.

Let me show you how to set up your private gold savings account.

Believe in the best. Prepare for the worst.

Let’s talk.

Wow. You did a super job clarifying what $1 Trillion is. And you’re right – this is a big problem, and is uncharted waters.
