Can Unforgiveness Cause Health Issues?

Can Unforgiveness Cause Health Issues?

If we dwell on hurtful events or situations, grudges filled with resentment, vengeance and hostility can take root. Having hostility pumping through our veins releases stress hormones. It can shut down our immune system, leading to a number of physical and mental health problems. Some research even suggests it can increase our risk for cardiovascular disease.

The Mayo Clinic website states that letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for compassion, kindness and peace. Forgiveness can lead to:

  1. Healthier relationships
  2. Greater spiritual and psychological well-being
  3. Less anxiety, stress and hostility
  4. Lower blood pressure
  5. Fewer symptoms of depression
  6. Lower risk of alcohol and substance abuse

In T. D. Jakes‘ latest book, Let It Go: Forgive So You Can Be Forgiven, he teaches us how to forgive and shows us the consequences of living with unforgiveness festering in our souls.

T. D. Jakes gives us tools to rid ourselves from living in the past of pain and guilt, provides examples of how to understand and communicate with negative people, and demonstrates how to live in peace and happiness.

In this YouTube clip, T.D. Jakes touches on a few of the themes in his book. It will give you the flavor of his message of forgiveness. He is a Christian minister – yes – but many of the principles he shares in his books apply to people of all walks of faith.

If you’ve been having difficulty forgiving someone of a past hurt, whether in your professional or personal life, Let It Go: Forgive So You Can Be Forgiven gives you the push you need to take that action. Read it and let me know if you agree!

To your life of happiness!
